M2M 2016: Top 100 Influencers and Brands

by | Aug 3, 2016 | Influencer Lists,

Machine to Machine (M2M) refers to direct communication between devices using any communications channel, including wired and wireless. The M2M market is undergoing a fast transformation as enterprises are increasingly realising the value of connecting geographically dispersed people, devices, sensors and machines to corporate networks. Today, industries such as healthcare, automotive, oil and gas, precision agriculture, military, government, smart cities/municipalities, manufacturing, and public utilities, among others, utilise M2M technologies for a myriad of applications. It is for precisely this reason that the Global M2M market is expected to grow to 27 billion devices, generating $1.6 trillion in revenue in 2024.

WHAT ARE THE INFLUENCERS SAYING?

We reached out to some of the top influencers on our list to ask them for their views on M2M. We spoke to Evan Kirstel (#6), Eric Vanderburg (#7), Lisa Briercliffe (#9), Lisa Pattenden (#12), Fabio Moioli (#20), Dana Blouin (#21) Dez Blanchfield (#22), Dr. James Canton (#24), Ronald van Loon (#26) and Ian M Calvert (#27). Be sure to follow them to stay up to date on the best content and resources on M2M.

Evan KirstelOnalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Evan Kirstel – Social Media Business Strategist (Advisor) at UCStrategies.com

“Really excited about the rise of M2M in telehealth / telemedicine and how it is becoming a fundamental driver for change in the healthcare industry. Given rising costs, an aging population, the increase in chronic diseases, the healthcare IT world must become more efficient and effective and M2M is a key tech change agent.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Eric VanderburgEric Vanderburg – Director, Information Systems and Security at JurInnov Ltd.

“M2M is a technological ecosystem that is expanding our world. Like the natural ecosystem of living organisms that are linked through energy flows and nutrient cycles, M2M links machines with machines to exchange data on the devices they are monitoring, and it is the framework on which IoT is built. M2M allows industrial machine components to provide status reports; cars to drive themselves; planes to understand weather conditions; lights to turn on when you are near; and your doggie door to open when your pet’s collar is near. M2M, and by extension IoT, fosters a greater understanding of the world and offer a host of possibilities only limited by our imagination. M2M has created an explosion of innovation and it is poised to deliver the greatest economic opportunities since the adoption of the Internet.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Lisa BriercliffeLisa Briercliffe – Principal Consultant Briercliffe Associates

“From my point of view M2M and the associated technologies of IOT and AI form the backbone of a very important move for the future. In a way M2M is not new and has been developed from process management systems in industry which have brought productivity gains over a long period of time.  The arrival of that same idea in the form of IOT and the substantial rise in the availability of sophisticated AI systems opens the door on a whole new era of opportunity. As a good example IBM in the form of Watson are delivering very sophisticated and affordable logic engines via the Cloud and the dynamic AI brain power that is now available to these sensor-driven process networks is truly ground-breaking. I expect to see the capitalisation upon M2M and these related technologies make a huge difference to the world in the very near future. My two greatest fears stem from the facts that robots need very intelligent programming and that any network on the basis of where we stand today is inherently insecure.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Lisa PattendenLisa Pattenden – Social Media Engagement Specialist at Social Helping Hand

“When I first heard of M2M I thought of crazy stuff like in Sci-fi movies. Then I had to have major brain surgery and got first hand knowledge of the things that are being developed in the M2M world to help in the medical field. I was fascinated with everything I could get my hands on, asking questions and reading everything I could. This is not just about machines it’s about people who had no hope of a quality life to now having the best life. M2M technology is new but is fertile ground for more to have a quality life. I just hope I’m sharing enough information that allows others to see the magic.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Fabio MoioliFabio Moioli – Head of Consulting & Services at Microsoft

“Machine to Machine (M2M) or the Internet of Things (IoT) – as it is often renamed – represents the next “world-changing” revolution, after the Industrial Revolution of 1750 – 1900, and following the Computer & Internet revolution which started in the 1950’s. It is an exciting scenario in which objects, personal devices, even animals communicate, take Intelligent decisions, sometimes autonomous actions on their own, without human interaction and working together with humans as “peers”. This revolution will completely transform industrial sectors and the entire world, for all of us, in ways as powerful as the Industrial Revolution and even more. It is our future, it is happening now, and it can bring fascinating and immense benefits to all of us. We have all to prepare for it, starting from today’s Digital Transformation.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Dana BlouinDana Blouin – Serial Entrepreneur, Speaker, IoT Thought Leader

“I see M2M as one of the most important segments of the larger IoT umbrella. In the coming year the vast majority of communication will take place passively between devices, M2M is going to play a much larger role in peoples lives than they will ever realize.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Dez BlanchfieldDez Blanchfield – Vice President of Technology at The Greenstone Group

“Few industries will escape the positive disruptive impact of Machine to Machine ( M2M ) communications. M2M should not be confused with the Internet of Things ( IoT ), indeed M2M is an integral part of IoT but IoT is only the tip of the proverbial block of ice as far as M2M is concerned. Those who come to understand M2M and harness it, leverage it, will indeed gain such significant advantage over their competitors that their competitors may never actually catch up. The immediate winners will be heavy industry, mining, engineering, logistics, retail, and telecoms. But there is a natural progression which will take place in a more organic fashion into health, entertainment, and human interaction. The breath and depth of what M2M promises ranges from giant dump trucks in mines, through to tiny pills we will swallow to report on our inner health on a mobile app, and everything in-between. We have only just begun to imagine what is possible. I foresee the birth of piezoelectric M2M bio circuits. Hundreds of millions using smart phones and personal health wrist straps have given us a small taste of what is to come. But when we see billions of us using thousands of transparent M2M interactions throughout our daily lives, that is when the true value of M2M will be fully realised. The positive impact of M2M on the quality of human and animal life will surely exceed anything science fiction novels have been all to allude to thus far. We do indeed live in interesting times.”

Onalytica M2M Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Dr. James CantonDr. James Canton – CEO Institue for Global Futures, author Future Smart: Managing the Game-Changing Trends that will Transform Your World

“The leading M2M trend that will accelerate M2M and IoT adoption will be artificial intelligence. AI, especially machine and deep learning as well as cognitive and neural networks will transform M2M adoption. Things that think, predict and solve problems automatically are coming at a global scale of innovation. AI solutions that have cognitive awareness–M2M that can learn, think and know what is needed and can automatically solve complex problems, go out to the cloud and find what is needed, this will be a game changer. M2M may become smarter than humans leading to a new evolution of Smart M2M solutions at the chip, network, software and even hardware level. Self-Evolving M2M will intuit, learn and create innovative solutions to meet grand challenges on the planet. M2M enabled by AI will be the most massive disruptive innovation on the planet leading to new solutions in medicine, finance, entertainment, security and manufacturing. This convergence will lead to advanced solutions that leverage big data, analytics and data science. Even separate technologies such as nanotechnology, 3D printing,robotics, bio-engineering and quantum computing will be integrated into a future global Cognitive M2M ecosystem. My new book FUTURE SMART Managing the Game-Changing Trends that will Transform Your World is available at Amazon http://goo.gl/6AQzLn

Onalytica - IoT, Big Data, Digital Transformation - Top 100 Influencers and Brands - Ronald van LoonRonald van Loon – Director at Adversitement
“M2M (Machine to Machine) solutions and IoT (Internet of Things) will have a significant positive impact on the customer experience and the many touch points throughout the customer journey. Therefore, with the help of M2M solutions the shopping experience is improved with the provision of online real time stock details, the facilitation of mobile payments, the provision of real-time information on special offers, automatic optimisation of stock on the basis of real time sales, monitoring of your health by means of your mobile device or the facilitation of automatic maintenance updates for transport systems. M2M is fuelling innovation and improving Customer Experience in the healthcare, retail, finance, construction, and transportation industry. Applying M2M solutions is no longer an optional exercise. It is a “must have”.

“With IIoT and IoT becoming more and more a part of our everyday dictionary through the use of advertising via Television, Radio, Newspapers and the Internet, the question is are you prepared for what M2M has to offer? Whether this is your Marketing or the IT Security provision, you need to be making both your Internal and External Communities aware of it now. As whilst you think it will happen soon, the truth is, it’s already here and in use! So, before you make your decision with anything IT related, are both your IT Network and IT Security prepared and ready for what M2M is bringing to you and your audience? The field of M2M is entering a whole field that businesses haven’t experienced before and are far from ready for, but unfortunately, Hackers and Cyber criminals are already working in this arena. This means, that you and your company need to make sure that Network is secure and your Customer’s data is secure too. Whilst nothing is ever totally secure, preparation and possible preventative measures means that you can have a safer feeling before implementing M2M tomorrow…..”

Disclaimer: As ever with these lists, it must be stressed that the ranking is by no means a definitive measurement of influence, as there is no such thing. The brands and individuals listed are undoubtedly influential when it comes to driving discussion around M2M.

The PageRank based methodology we use to extract influencers on a particular topic takes into account the number and quality of contextual references that a user receives. These calculations also take into account a user’s relevance (number of tweets on topic) and reach (number of followers). If you want to learn more, please read our article that outlines influencer identification.
